Slower action there reported just lately after some good quality fish were hooked in the previous higher and dirtier water color. These 23 & 25 lb Salmon were caught in 450 to 500 fow.40 to 120 down, using Dipseys 180 to 220 just slightly west of the Oak. Water temps had warmed up prob near 40 F and should retreat again in the near term. Once pressured, browns may move a little distance from the tails of the salmon but they will still likely be in the closest broken water downstream. 3.5. This amount of fishing pressure in these high ish flows will put next to no pressure on the fish. The late summer bites have been with spoons and flasher-flies. . That may well all blow out after this latest round of precipitation. The fish are placed in downstream pens at Ernsts Lake Breeze Marina and will be fed and cared for before release in about 3 4 weeks. Light tackle drifting from small boat or bankside too. Little to no fishing pressure because of the recent events, with the few anglers out enjoying action like this for early Apr 2020 steelhead in the Oak. Without overflow levels now, some might be inclined to call it only slightly high. That could be the ticket to get some salmon migrations cranking. Anglers who find the best fishing often anticipate when the right conditions will come together. On the backside of this latest cold weather and accompanying wind, the land lubber casters and small boat trollers and small boat casters should be able to get back on those near shore brown trout in semi stained water while the cooler water and bait hangs around. Both inshore structure, mid water and offshore has a mixed bag catch available. On their way to Wilson Harbor, he reports that they started catching browns and cohoes just shy of Shadigee in 7-10 FOW. Water temps have flirted with 40F but should slide back with the forecasted colder weather ahead. With the final weekend of the Lake Ontario Counties Fall Derby approaching, it is important to be in the contest if you are on the water. Salmon will likely be found from the estuary up through town. On the west side of Shadigee just past Flat Top, they hit their first King and the further they went, the better it got. The rain is Lake Effect so as is often the case with snow most of it goes south of the area. Could be guys were finding easier fishing flows on the smaller waterways. Light fishing pressure with just a handful of cars at each parking spot. The longer range forecast looks like back to colder for rest of next week. The weather continues with near record warmth! Chance of rain and colder temps and windy conditions for the end of the week but back to relatively mild temps again by the weekend. Also a few more brown trout hook ups have been reported, but its plenty earlier for that with lots of good trout action ahead of us. Mild winters or short duration cold weather lasting into spring is generally considered good for alewife survival, and hopefully a so far mild winter will bode well for alewife. A few guys report crowding, but as compared to say last year Id have to say there are a few less guys out and about. The other area smaller waterways are about mod with water color of about 2+ ft of viz. Patience and persistence on the Oak may finally be paying off. After several days of strong west winds both charter and Rec boats got back out. Temps forecast today in the 40sF and a little bit cooler tomorrow with a chance of rain/snow showers later Wednesday. Well just have to wait and see if itll be a hard and fast melt or something a little more moderate and gradual. Fishing pressure is real light I saw just one car on the Oak. Already hearing of small boat civilian trollers on the near shore Lake Ontario waters having success so casters at the pier heads should be able to get in on that action too. Boat angling easily the least expensive bargain for big salmonid angling chances where you get to feel the strike and experience an honest battle without heavier trolling gear. Any rainfall is really going to get things cranking and water color this time is likely to get dirty. And then theres always that concentration of fish and people at the dam. High flows can limit the movement of fish, and lower flows can restrict them. Best baits will be small egg patterns; be it flies, rubber eggs or even egg sacs. Low water, aka an average fall, short leaders, BB shot is not likely to cut it right now for presentations, especially on the Oak. This up and down would be mostly unnoticed under ice cover anyway, except for on the Oak. It wont break the drought conditions but it may just perk up the action in the area smaller tribs. Capt. Some forecasted showers that for once turned into more like rainstorms yesterday and today have brought along that nice gloom for fish migrations, but probably will not change any trib flows much. So no big change in flows yet in the Oak. Bob! The Orleans County waters at Point Breeze are providing an excellent mixed bag catch of late! Be sure you contact NYSDEC with comments on the predation from over-abundant cormorants and the impacts on the young stocked salmonids. Erica finds it hard to hold up nearly 20 lbs of fresh King caught at the Oak Orchard rivermouth! The medium to slightly high flows in the Oak are proving to be a nice draw for Kings. Capt. No trolling gear required, you can get in on this action casting or drifting! Any future rise in flows should perk up the action for fresh fish so well hope the upcoming forecasat brings that on either with rain or snow and then melt off. Fish as soon as reasonable conditions allow instead of waiting for supposed better conditions that may or may not materialize. 14016 Route 31 West Any significant precipitation will quickly raise all the trib flows up again with the chance for off color flows. The other area smaller tribs comparitively to the Oak anyway, have better looking flows at low to mod and slightly stained viz. The northeast coastal weather put a damper on show attendance and the vendors participating were down some thanks to Covid worry but the anglers who did visit the show had good interest in all of the Lake Ontario trout and salmon fishing opportunities. Other area smaller tribs should be retreating toward medium or lower to moderate and slightly stained. Still hanging on to warm (hot) weather but theres a change afoot in the forecast with chance of significant rain mid week and a cool down. First timers from Texas, Shawn and Heather had a good morning on Lake Ontario today! The steelhead and coho salmon were both caught on spoons straight out from the Oak Orchard River. Port Bay water is very warm and there has been weed growth near the south end. At least its good to see organizers and attendees efforts at getting back to a normal pre-Covid scene. So with light angling pressure in the Oak, a few drop backs, spawners and fresh fish have been encountered in the low and clear flows. (Some fresh salmon are still likely to be in the mix easily thru November). Fished the 26-27 line, a little west but not far. Both kings and Cohos are being caught. Forecast ahead is for a mid week warmup with chance of rain or showers end of week and then sharply cooler for the weekend. No icing anywhere and the downstream slow water is wide open. All the trib flows are on the retreat from the last rain. This is kind of a reset (at least when it warms back up) and with a return to some more inviting flows and stained water there should be new migrations of spring fish.
